Gary Clark Jr. Sweet Home Chicago
Gary Clark Jr gives up this week’s lick. From a performance in Washington DC honoring Buddy Guy, and featuring a stage full of stars including, besides Clark, Bonnie Raitt and Jeff Beck, Gary laid out a burning solo.
The tune is in the key of E, and the lick is played over two bars of a IV (A7) chord. The notes are taken from the A9 chord staring with the 3rd, 5th and 9th of the chord (C#, E and B). From there it moves down, via a passing Bb, to the root (A) and on to the 7th. The figure is repeated for the 2nd bar of A7, and moves to an E7 (I), where the 3rd and 7th of the chord are played simultaneously.
It’s pretty simple. Play a barred A7 chord to see where the notes come from.
